Understanding Smoothing

Nanoplasty vs Keratin

Both smooth the hair. They do it differently. Knowing the difference means recommending the right service every time, protecting fibre integrity, and keeping clients coming back.

Nanoplasty uses nano-sized amino acids, organic acids and proteins to penetrate inside the hair cortex. It repairs and realigns from within, delivering a soft, glossy finish with natural movement. Think of it as internal reconstruction that also smooths.

Keratin (Smooth 40) is the salon workhorse. It coats and seals the outer cuticle layer, creating a strong surface barrier that blocks humidity and frizz. The result is sleek, polished and highly controlled. Smooth 40 is fast to apply, predictable in outcome, and fits easily into same-day colour services. It is the go-to system for salons building a reliable smoothing menu.

Smooth 40 is the foundation. Nanoplasty extends your range for clients who need internal repair.

Both last three to six months with sulphate-free care and heat protection. Both are formaldehyde-free. The key is matching the right system to the client's hair history, texture, and desired finish.

At a Glance

How It Works

Nanoplasty supports the inside of the fibre and realigns it.
Keratin smooths the outside for strong surface control.

Hair Type

Nanoplasty suits coloured, dry or porous hair that needs strength with movement.
Keratin suits coarse, thick or very curly hair that needs a sleek polished finish.

Colour Timing

Do colour work first, then book smoothing. Surface sealing from keratin can make later lift or toner uptake harder. Nanoplasty is often chosen after lightening because it supports the fibre.

Process & Time

Nanoplasty has a dwell stage then heat sealing. Keratin choices like Smooth 40 take about 90 to 120 minutes from start to finish.

How Long It Lasts

Both services often last three to six months with sulphate-free care and heat protection.

Choose Keratin (Smooth 40) when

  • You want a proven, reliable system that works on most hair types
  • Client wants sleek, smooth hair with strong frizz control and quick daily styling
  • Fast chair time is a priority - results in 90 to 120 minutes
  • Colour work is being done the same day or no lift is planned soon
  • Client prefers a clear, simple process with predictable, consistent results
  • Hair is coarse, thick, very curly or highly resistant and needs strong surface control

Choose Nanoplasty when

  • Hair is colour-lifted or porous and needs strength as well as smoothing
  • Client wants smooth shiny hair that still moves naturally
  • Fibre needs internal support after lift or frequent colour work
  • Client is happy with a little more time in the chair for a long-lasting result
  • Results improve with regular services as the fibre becomes stronger
How Long Does It Last

Usually three to six months for both, with sulphate-free care and heat protection.

Will Colour Be Affected

Do colour first. If you plan to lift later, choose timing carefully since surface sealing can slow lift.

What Finish Will I Get

Nanoplasty gives soft movement. Keratin gives sleek surface control.

Frequently Asked Questions

NVL Smoothing Systems

Clear answers for salon professionals and clients.

What is nanoplasty
Nanoplasty is a salon treatment that smooths and strengthens hair from the inside. It uses tiny active ingredients like gentle acids and proteins that go deep into the hair fibre to repair and realign it. Heat locks in the result so hair looks smooth, shiny, and easy to style. With good home care, results often last three to six months.
How is nanoplasty different from keratin
Nanoplasty works inside the hair fibre, repairing and realigning the internal structure for a soft, natural finish with movement. Keratin (like Smooth 40) coats and seals the outer cuticle layer for maximum surface control and a sleeker result. Both are formaldehyde-free. Nanoplasty is better after colour work; keratin is faster and gives more control on very curly or resistant hair.
How long do results last
Both nanoplasty and keratin services typically last three to six months. Longevity depends on hair type, home care routine, and how often the client washes. Sulphate-free shampoo and heat protection are essential for maintaining results.
Will colour be affected
Always do colour work first, then book the smoothing service. Keratin's surface sealing can make later lift or toner uptake harder, so plan accordingly. Nanoplasty is often the preferred choice after lightening because it supports the fibre internally rather than coating it.
Which NVL system should I choose
Use the consultation calculator on this page for a personalised recommendation. Smooth 40 Clear is the go-to keratin for medium to dark levels. Smooth 40 Violet is the keratin choice for blonde and highlighted hair. If your client needs internal fibre repair with natural movement, consider Nano 50 (blonde) or Nano 60 (brunette/resistant).
Is nanoplasty safe for salon teams and clients
Yes. All NVL systems are formaldehyde-free, paraben-free, and vegan-friendly. There is no harsh chemical odour during application. Always ensure proper ventilation as standard salon practice, and follow the recommended heat settings for each hair type.
What are the heat and pass guides
For Smooth 40: Clear formula at 210-230 C, Violet formula at 180-200 C, iron 7-10 times per section (5-7 for damaged hair). For Nano 50 (blonde): max 210 C, 7-15 passes per section. For Nano 60 (brunette): coarse/resistant 210-230 C with 15-20 passes, normal 190-210 C with 10-15 passes, fragile 150-170 C with 7-10 passes. Apply NVL Heatshield Primer before ironing for Nano 60.
What aftercare keeps results longest
The NVL Anti-Frizz Shampoo and Conditioner are essential. They are sulphate-free and specifically designed to protect keratin and nanoplasty bonds. Every smoothing client should leave with this pair. Beyond that: avoid washing for 48 hours after the service, no tying hair tightly during the first 48 hours, always use heat protection, and book maintenance appointments every 12 to 16 weeks for nanoplasty.
Can nanoplasty and keratin live on the same menu
Absolutely. They serve different client needs. Nanoplasty suits clients wanting fibre repair with natural movement, especially after colour. Keratin suits clients wanting maximum straightness and fast service. Offering both gives your salon a complete smoothing solution.
Who can perform NVL services
